Celebrating Diwali with Party Rickshaw

One of our favourite projects as a studio is the deck of playing cards we created for our friends at Party Rickshaw, an Indian cultural event planning company in Toronto. To celebrate Diwali, and India’s rich cultural history, each of Night Shift’s four designers illustrated a suit of face cards based upon different Indian royal dynasties.

I created the face card illustrations for diamonds. To represent this suit, we chose the modern dynasty, Maharani and Maharaja Gayatri Devi, and Prince Sawai Padmanabh Singh of Jaipur.

I laid out all of the arrangements for the numbered cards, as well as designed the numerals themselves to extend the type face into numeric characters.

We designed five distinct decorative patterns to embellish the large blocks of colour. Each suit and the joker has a focal pattern displayed in the halo surrounding the figures’ heads.
